UNDERSTANDING LANDSCAPE DESIGN

A well-designed, accurate, and comprehensive plan is more than just a pretty picture.

When it comes to building or improving a home, most people understand the need for an architect or interior designer. But when it comes to the outdoors, landscape design is often misunderstood - or overlooked entirely.

The truth is: your outdoor space requires the same level of planning, creativity, and technical expertise as the inside of your home. What, exactly, goes into a carefully crafted, creative and accurate landscape design?

Let’s dig in.

Design fees vary based on the level of expertise, technical depth, and construction readiness built into the final plan.

A landscape design that considers grading, drainage, logistics, and realistic budgeting from the outset provides clarity during installation and reduces unnecessary revisions.

Thoughtful documentation and disciplined planning allow the project to move forward with confidence.

I do things differently than most design firms. With over 10 years of hands-on design, construction, and project management experience, I approach every project with a deep understanding of how the design will actually be built. I conduct a detailed site analysis, design to fit a real-world budget, and create a unique, creative and accurate plan that I use to price and build with confidence.

Landscape design is more than just a pretty picture - it’s a smart, thorough, and long-lasting solution tailored to your space. Investing in thoughtful design up front can save you thousands in construction mistakes later.

DESIGN PROCESS

STEP 1:   Design Consultation + Proposal

I meet with you on-site to discuss your wants and needs. We'll walk the property together to get a good understanding of the current site conditions, challenges and grading / drainage concerns.

Following our meeting, I prepare a detailed design proposal outlining the recommended scope of work and corresponding design investment specific to your project.

STEP 2:   PREDESIGN + SITE ANALYSIS

In the predesign phase, your design program is developed and visual direction established. City, county, and HOA requirements are researched to ensure feasibility from the outset.

The site is measured and analyzed - including grade changes and environmental conditions - and a detailed base plan of the existing property and structures is prepared to form the technical foundation for conceptual development.

STEP 3:  Preliminary Design + Design Development

A fully customized 2D design is developed for your property, integrating hardscape, lawn areas, planting beds, gardens, and outdoor living spaces. Grade changes are resolved to ensure the design is refined and construction-ready.

Each layout is composed with attention to proportion, circulation, and long-term usability - creating a cohesive and enduring outdoor environment.

A planting scheme is curated in response to your site’s soil, light, and water conditions. Plants are spaced at maturity to ensure proper scale and lasting visual harmony.

A 3D model of your landscape is constructed to allow you to clearly visualize the finished landscape prior to construction.

A comprehensive design package is prepared that includes curated inspiration, plant and material selections.

Following our meeting, these materials are left with you for your continued review and consideration.

STEP 4:  Construction Drawings + Specifications

Comprehensive installation drawings are prepared to clearly communicate the design intent for construction. These typically include a layout plan identifying the location and finish of hardscape elements, a fully specified planting plan with quantities and placement, a landscape lighting plan, and all additional documentation required to execute the project accurately.

These detailed plans provide clarity for contractors and may be submitted for HOA approval and permits where required.

Every successful project begins with disciplined planning and intentional design.
